Brusing
by: William GilesAt the moment of impact, the accelerated striking instrument (such as a shin, fist, baseball or skateboard) transfers it’s force. The force delivered by the striking instrument is absorbed by the body and the absorption rate is greatest at the impact site. The impact site is now subjected to bruising.
An impact damages capillaries which allows blood to seep into the surrounding tissues. Minor bruises can be easily recognized by the black, blue or purple colorization caused by the impact. The discoloration is a side affect of a broken blood vessel. Hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that binds and carries oxygen, turns red in the presents of oxygen and blue when the oxygen is removed. The tissues use up the oxygen quickly yet the broken blood vessel is unable to resupply fresh blood. The yellowish color of the bruising is caused by the breakdown of the hemoglobin.
The bruise disappears when the red blood cells degenerate and are reabsorbed. The effects of bruising varies with the intensity of the impact. Tenderness and swelling gradually fades during the healing process which can take up to two weeks. Massaging the effected area may relieve pain and encourage blood flow. KruShin’s concaved rollers moves around the stagnant blood that gathers around the impact site.
A deficiency in Vitamin C can also make a person more susceptible to bruises from impacts
